COMPETITOR

Matt Pelton and Doug Martin

HEAD COOK:

COMPETITION: World Recipe Championship

QUALIFYING EVENT: Dutch Oven Society's 2012 World Championship Cook-off

Last Frontier Dutch Ovens Competition Team is made up of Matt Pelton and Doug Martin - both located in Utah. They are sponsored by Bob & Louise Sammons and Harmon’s Grocery. 2012 is the first year they competed as a team in the IDOS WCCO and won Grand Champion. Matt & Doug are also Competition BBQers who, in the past have competed against each other. They have numerous awards for placing in these competitions so it was natural that they decided to cook together as a competition Dutch oven team. Both cooks are very creative when it comes to cooking. They enjoy the diversity of Dutch oven cooking that allows them to develop their own recipes. Matt has authored several books on Dutch oven cooking, recipes, and care of Dutch ovens. He often dreams what they should cook for their main. Doug is the creative force behind the desserts. He has taken several cake decorating/fondant flower making classes to enhance the presentation of his cakes and is always looking for new ideas. They put months of weekend practice cooks under their belts in preparation for their first IDOS WCCO. Both men work full time jobs, but it is cooking that is their passion. They have very supportive wives, families, and friends. Matt was born in Provo, UT, and raised most of his life in Levan, UT. He spent most of his youth hunting and fishing on horseback in the mountains of Central Utah. When he was a senior in high school, his parents moved to Lindon. His fascination with cooking with Cast Iron came early in life, but he didn't start practicing a lot until after he got married. He has written three books, "From Mountaintop to Tabletop", "Cast Iron Chef" and “The Outdoor Gourmet”. He is also the editor of the “International Dutch Oven Society Dutch Oven News” magazine. He competes in professional division barbecue as well as his Dutch oven competitions. Doug was born in Boise, ID, and raised most of his life in Wichita KS. When he was a junior in high school, his family relocated to Asheville NC where he lived until he left for college to Mars Hill on a soccer scholarship. He later joined the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany, Bosnia, and Virginia. Doug is an avid outdoorsman who loves to hunt, fish and camp. He has always been interested in cooking, but didn't really get into it, until his wife went on a cooking strike telling him that he needed to take over cooking duties. Since then he has taken up professional division barbecuing as well as Dutch oven cooking and competed in both venues where he has been very successful.
