WFC announces expansion and sanctioning for BBQ in 2015
The World Food Championships announced today that it is expanding the field for its World Barbecue Championship in 2015, as well as seeking Master Series sanctioning from the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS).

Thanks to the relocation of the WFC to Kissimmee, Florida, the barbecue category will now be open to at least 100 teams, twice the amount of competitors last year. "This is very exciting and important to our championship," commented WFC President Mike McCloud. "As one of the most popular and mature Food Sport categories, BBQ has a ton of teams that have not been able to compete in years past. So we are glad to be able to expand our field and make more room for some of the most passionate cookers around."

Another major change in the works for this year's WFC barbecue category is status as a KCBS Master Series competition. This change, once approved by the KCBS board, will make it possible for KCBS teams to earn coveted Team of the Year points – a first in the World Food Championships’ history.

"We've heard this desire for several years now, and we felt like it was time to make the change," explained McCloud, who works closely with KCBS as a corporate sponsorship and marketing agent. "We still hope to see bbq teams from all types of sanctioning bodies at the WFC. But we know that as the richest and largest series in the world, the KCBS pro circuit really focuses on events that award Team of Year points. It just makes sense that the largest food competition in the world would make itself a part of the most exciting points chase in barbecue."

Once approved for this Master Series sanctioning, the WFC will announce an Open registration for up to 50 teams. The remaining 50 spots will be designated as usual through select Automatic Qualifiers, Preferred Qualifiers and International Championships. That prestigious list will be announced Friday, January 30th.

In the coming weeks, numerous key announcements about qualifiers, categories and prize purses will be announced on this web site.
