WFC ANNOUNCES 2016 COMPETITION RULES & UPDATES
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Jan. 19, 2016) – The competition committee for the World Food Championships has released the revised Rules & Regulations for the 2016 tournament.
The complete Rules & Regulations document can be viewed or downloaded here.
“Just like other major sports leagues, the process and tournament format of WFC requires constant assessment because it is evolving and expanding,” said Mike McCloud, CEO of World Food Championships. “So after seeking and reviewing a lot of feedback, we feel like these changes and additions will help us make WFC stronger and a more rewarding experience for our competitors.”
Among the notable changes for 2016 include adherence to a very defined registration period, which will occur from Monday, February 1 to Saturday, October 1. WFC will also expand on-site competition registration through the entire event week. Competition registration will now be open between 9 am and 5 pm, starting Tuesday, November 8 through Friday, November 11. All teams and judges must be registered 24 hours before their official cooks’ or judges’ meetings.
From a competition standpoint, the committee brought back a rule from previous WFC events, and now competitors in the Category Finals (Top 10 round) must present 10 samples of their dish for judging. This allows for a larger sample size of tasting and scoring, which is key since each category’s World Champion is determined by this single-entry round.
The committee also made a significant change to the definition of head cooks/competitors as it relates to the tournament. As stated in Rule 2, head cooks can have anyone act as an assistant/sous chef, as long as that person is NOT an active competitor in the tournament. Once a head cook is eliminated from the tournament, they are no longer considered a “competitor,” and can act as an assistant to another head cook.
Another significant change came in how the WFC Golden Tickets, and the WFC entrance fee waiver or travel stipends sometimes associated with them, are allocated. As stated in Rule 3, Golden Tickets cannot be transferred by the winning competitor to another person; if the winner of the Ticket (and benefits associated) chooses not to compete, the Ticket will be transferred to a runner-up from the qualifying event.
Additionally, as stated in Rule 4, while competitors can enter and win multiple qualifying events, they must choose the one category/qualifier they want to represent. The remaining Tickets/benefits will be released back to WFC and transferred to those event’s runners-up.
