WFC Wraps Up 2018 Qualifier Week
ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (Jan. 20, 2018) – It was a big week for Food Sport as we released information on all the major gateways to the 7th Annual World Food Championships, the largest and most influential event in the industry. There were more than 500 events and partners announced throughout the week, including new Canadian and American State Partners who will help conduct local qualifying events in their respective regions.
WFC is also announcing today that its popular new Wild Card Challenge, a virtual tournament within the tournament, will once again return in 2018. This contest, which tracks the best performance of participants with a Wild Card Golden Ticket, rewards the top finishers with cash bonuses on top of category payouts. For example, last year's winner, Kim Banick from Salem, Oregon, won $3,000 cash on top of her 1st place $10,000 prize purse package in the Seafood category. Any contestant from any category can upgrade their Golden Ticket to a Wild Card Golden Ticket, but there will be a maximum of 20 Wild Card tickets available in 2018. More details on how to upgrade your ticket to Wild Card status will be released through the competitor portal.
WFC has also decided to bring back its Super Qualifier Challenge, which will be held on the last day of the Main Event and give up to 20 teams a chance to earn bonus prizes and a Golden Ticket for the 2019 WFC. This contest is a Mystery Basket challenge and is open to the top performing teams who are still at WFC but didn’t make the Top 10’s in their respective category. Heather Walker from Phoenix, Arizona, was the 2017 winner of the Super Qualifier.
Like last year, the Main Event will be open to trained chefs, seasoned home cooks and pro teams from across the globe who will compete in the following ten categories -- Barbecue, Bacon, Burger, Chef, Chili, Dessert, Chicken, Sandwich, Seafood and Steak. The Champions in each of these categories will face off against each other in WFC’s “ultimate food fight,” The Final Table, to determine the overall 2018 World Food Champion.
As a reminder to all contestants, competitors who finished in the Top 10 of their categories in 2017 do not have to qualify for 2018’s event. They simply have to register online through our system, which will be open for registrations on Feb 1, 2018.
The 2018 World Food Championships will once again be held at The Wharf in Orange Beach, Alabama. The official competition week is scheduled for Nov 7th through the 11th, with the Final Table once again separated for a special, elevated experience in the Spring.
For competitor convenience, we’re making this article a one-stop-shop for all the qualifier details released this past week. Just find your preferred route below and follow the links for more details. (But keep in mind, WFC is continually working with events and promoters to add new venues and challenges to the mix. So stay tuned as we review other requests from new events or official petitions.)
No matter what avenue you take to gain entry into the WFC, we hope to see your name pop up as the champion of one of these qualifying events in 2018, and that we see you back in Orange Beach this November!
