Homer's Grand Champion to be selected on May 17

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Homer's Backyard Ball has been selected as a qualifier for this fall's World Food Championships, the world's highest-stakes food competiton, and this year's Homer's Grand Champion selected on May 17 will receive a travel stipend and free entry to the November event.

To compete to be the Grand Champion, the competitor must turn in all three categories -- chicken, brisket and ribs. The local winner will secure a spot in the World Food Championships, or "The Ultimate Food Fight", with a max of 550 competitors and total purse of $300,000.

The weekend's event has a strongest lineup of music out of its 18 year history including Robert Earl Keen, The Josh Abbott Band, Kevin Fowler, Tejas Brothers, Uncle Lucius, and Strangetown.

The day-long bash takes place on the acreage at I-40 and Whitaker in Amarillo on May 17. Gates open at 11 a.m.

Along with live music and cook-off, there will also be redneck games and other activities.

Homer's Backyard Ball is open to the public and BYOB. Glass containers and pets are NOT allowed.

Proceeds will benefit the Make-a-Wish foundation of North Texas, the Khiva Shrine of Amarillo, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and other children's activities.
